Wow my kitchen cabinets look incredible now! I hired Elvis to come and update the look of my kitchen because I didn't want to spend $15,000 buying new cabinets. They completely transformed the look of my cabinets and I absolutely LOVE them! Elvis is incredible!

- Samantha G. (Charlotte resident)

I was looking for someone reputable to come and see if we can update our kitchen without spending $50,000. I found Elvis online and he came and gave an awesome quote for refinishing and repainting my cabinets. I had high hopes but he absolutely went above and beyond for my kitchen! The cabinets literally look brand new! Elvis and his team are top quality and I can't say enough great things about them!

- Jean K. (Huntersville resident)

My wife and I wanted to update our kitchen when we moved in. Things were nice, but they just weren't our style. We called a few companies, but Elvis really took the most time and care to walk us through the process of painting our cabinets. He was thorough and detailed and we loved his approach. He came out the next week and got started and they had everything painted and done in a week. My wife and I are stunned and just love the new look. Elvis was really great!

Why Refinish Your Cabinets?

This is a common question we get from homeowners and property flippers. It’s often propagated with TV shows that you always need to “completely guy” the kitchen and start over. This is not always necessary nor feasible on some budgets. What if, instead of completely replacing things in the kitchen, you could find ways to save money and still have an amazing finished product?

That’s what Charlotte Cabinet Refinishing can do.

In addition to saving money, you can save a lot of time! Demolishing and reinstalling brand new kitchen cabinet takes a lot of time. Even moving extremely quickly, it could take an entire week to fully gut a large kitchen cabinet job (assuming everything goes perfect). With refinishing, the entire process can be done in as little as 4 days if we’re moving fast!

But what about the final look and feel? Does it still look good with refinished cabinets? Our honest opinion is YES! We have so many clients tell us that our work has completely revitalized the space and they had no idea their existing cabinets could look so incredible here in Charlotte!

We can accommodate any style or design your heart could desire (in most situations). And truthfully, if we believe we cannot create the perfect final look based on your requirements, we will tell you that cabinet refinishing isn’t for you. That’s an extremely rare situation, because we honestly think we can help 99% of all homeowners out in Charlotte, NC.

Should You Replace Or Refinish Your Cabinets?

This is another common question we hear and our opinion is that it depends. And that’s not the answer many clients want to hear, but this is our reasoning.

Do you have a very specific look and feel you’re trying to accomplish that your existing cabinets won’t solve? For example, maybe you have cabinets that don’t stretch all the way to the ceiling and you’d like that look. Obviously, refinishing those cabinets cannot ever solve that. So in that instance, yes replacing the cabinets makes sense.

But what if you’re happy with the existing cabinets but just wish they could look completely different? Then, this is a perfect situation for cabinet refinishing! We can customize a final design to fit your exact needs. Whether it’s a stained finish or a painted finish, we can help you!

So for us, there’s always a need to discuss the entire situation before giving a definitive answer on a certain cabinet here in Charlotte. It depends on the customer and what they want and what they can afford here in NC!

Cabinet Refinishing vs Cabinet Refacing

Here’s another great question we get asked, what’s the difference between cabinet refinishing and cabinet refacing? This should be talked about thoroughly with a contractor so you understand what you’re purchasing.

Cabinet Refinishing - The process of sanding and stripping the existing coating on your existing cabinet doors. Then applying something new to them to change their appearance. This can be done with a new stain color or a new paint color. The important point is that we do not install any new cabinet pieces in the refinishing process. You keep the exact cabinets and doors you have, we just make them look fantastic! We do commonly see customers replace the hardware in this process, but it’s personal preference.

Cabinet Refacing - This is the process of completely removing and replacing the cabinet front doors. The body (or box) of the cabinet remains exactly as it is. New door designs can be chosen and new hardware installed on the old cabinet boxes. The boxes are often covered with paint or veneer to match the new doors being installed. Cabinet refacing (also called cabinet resurfacing) can help cover or fix broken parts of the cabinets. Doors and hinges are common areas for cracks and breaks in cabinets. Refacing can help cover those up.

There’s no doubt that cabinet refinishing is the faster process. It’s also often cheaper. But again, it depends on what the homeowner wants. If the homeowner wants a specific design on the front of the cabinet doors, refinishing won’t solve that. You’ll need to reface the cabinets with new doors. But if the look is fine currently, consider the cost benefit and time saved by just having them refinished instead.

Common FAQs About Cabinet Refinishing

Where Can You Change Cabinets With Refinishing?

We find that most often, clients choose the kitchen to refinish cabinets. It’s a large space that often can get pricey to replace the entire cabinets or even to just replace the fronts. However, we see customers refinish cabinets in large master bathrooms often also. Some customers even opt to go for kitchen cabinet painting to completely change the look and feel of their kitchen design without completely remodeling the space.

How Much Does It Cost To Refinish Cabinets in North Carolina?

This can vary depending on some factors, but we typically see customers pay between $1,500 and $4,500 for cabinet refinishing. That’s somewhere between $4 and $10 per square foot of cabinet face in your home. Things that can impact this cost include:

  • Finish option (stain, varnish, paint, etc)
  • Number of cabinets
  • Difficulty with cabinet location (if you have some tough and tight spaces)
  • Whether you want new hardware
  • Existing damage on the doors or cabinet boxes
  • And more

Is it cheaper to stain or paint cabinets? Is painting an option?

We find that staining is slightly less expensive than painting cabinets. This is mostly due to material costs of paint versus stain. It’s not huge, but could be between $500 - $1000 less expensive depending on how many cabinets you have. Cabinet painting is a common option when the finished look is a certain color (usually white)

But if you truly want a specific color option in your kitchen or bathroom of your home, this is a cost that’s absorbable by most homeowners. Often if you’re going to spend the money on refinishing, you want the final look that fits your desire so an extra few hundred won’t hinder the decision.

Can you restain cabinets without sanding?

In many cases, yes you can restain cabinets without sanding them down completely. You’ll still need to strip the existing coat of varnish or polish to get access to the wood, but then you should be able to apply a new stain color. It might take 2 coats and a final polyurethane coat, but that process does work on most wood cabinets.

Can you stain cabinets over an existing stain color?

This can get tricky for a home DIYer, but the answer is yes in most circumstances. As long as the new stain is darker than the existing stain, you should be able to apply the new stain directly over the old stain. We recommend trying it in a small section of the cabinets first to test the final look. Mixing stain colors can produce unique colors that weren’t exactly what you expected.

What is the most popular stain color for kitchen cabinets?

This is always a personal preference, but we find many customers prefer a cherry stained kitchen cabinet when reapplying stain colors. It gives that grand kitchen appearance that seems almost “Old World” like and the red hughe provides a deep and proper feel.

For paint, it’s undoubtedly white painted cabinets in the home. That’s by far the most popular from all the fix and flip shows out there that have popularized this concept. But we are finding many people drifting from straight white to grey lately to help minimize the feeling of being like everyone else.

Does cabinet refinishing add value to the home?

Value is all in the perception of a buyer and seller. If you have old cabinets that look like they’re from the 1950s, potential buyers will view that as a negative and value the kitchen less. But refinishing the cabinets can make them look new and fresh. This can give the feeling to a buyer that the cabinets are high quality and in great working condition, therefore increasing the perceived value. It’s a tough thing to fully quantify, but we honestly believe that yes cabinet refinishing adds value when done in both a home kitchen and bathroom.
